If your path takes you down route 23 from either the north or the south, you can take route 23 to 96. This is exit 60 on route 23. You want to take route 96 East.

Directions From South or East

You can see that route 5, 96, and 696 all meet. The directions that follow start at this point.

If you are driving up from Ohio, you can take route 23 to route 96. Another option is to take I-75 to 275 north to route 96. The following directions can be followed from this point.

If you cross paths with 696 (from I-75 or I-94 on the East side, for example) you can take 696 to route 5 north as well. The directions below were written assuming that you are driving in from 696.

Directions from route 696 to the Church

Take 696 WEST to the 275 route 5 interchange.
Stay in the right lane and follow route 5 North to the end at 14 MILE Road.
Stay in the middle lane (2nd from left). As you cross 14 mile, stay to the right as you do the left hand loop. You are now headed SOUTH on route 5 in the right hand lane headed back towards 14 Mile Road. The Michiganders call that a Michigan left.
At the light (14 Mile Rd) turn RIGHT and head WEST. If you accidently turned RIGHT before the loop and headed EAST, you will hit Haggerty.
Take 14 Mile Road WEST to the next light, Welch Road.
Turn RIGHT onto WELCH Road and head NORTH to the second Light, Pontiac Trail.
Turn LEFT onto PONTIAC TRAIL (WEST) to South Commerce Rd. (second light)
Turn RIGHT onto SOUTH COMMERCE Road and head North to the church.
Saint Matthew Lutheran Church is on the right about 0.74 miles.

Directions From M-59

Take M-59 to Telegraph Road South. Telegraph Road is also called 24.
South on Telegraph to Orchard Lake Road.
Turn Right onto Orchard Lake Road to Commerce Road.
Turn Right onto Commerce Road. It is the only way you can go on Commerce Road.
Take Commerce Road to Newton Rd. Newton Rd is the first light after Union Lake Road (Kmart and Farmer Jacks).
Left on Newton Road. The only way you can go on Newton. Take Newton Road to the end.
Newton Road ends on Oakley Park.
Turn Right onto Oakley Park.
Take Oakley Park to the first light, South Commerce Road.
Turn Left onto South Commerce Road.
Saint Matthew Lutheran Church is on the left about 1.4 miles.

You can see on a map that Orchard Lake Road meets up with Pontiac Trail. I believe that there is construction and a detour on Pontiac Trail so the directions above are probably better than simply taking Orchard Lake Road to Pontiac Trail to South Commerce Road.
